Two-Week Increments
It dawned on me as I was doing some grocery-shopping at the local Harris Teator. Each week, I pick-up a gallon or two of milk, and I always look at the expiration date, trying to get the latest possible date, which is usually two weeks away.
Two weeks ago, I was amazed when the expiration date said October 31. Wow, November is already here. When I go to the store this weekend, we will already be in the middle of November.
Time sure flies, unless, of course, you are talking about the Obama agenda, which seems stuck in a time-warp.
Congressional calendars are funny things. If you consider all of the holidays (we just had Columbus Day, Veterans Day is coming up, and then, of course, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, etc), and throw in the three-day work weeks, there simply isn’t much time to get much done.
It is almost November, and Speaker Pelosi is just today unveiling whatever health care bill she will have to back away from next week. Over in the Senate, Senate Leader Harry Reid is waiting to hear back from CBO before he unveils the details of his public option light bill that is already dead-on-arrival before it gets to the Senate floor.
They say that they are going to get these bills to the President’s desk by Christmas, but first they have to pass them on the respective Chamber’s floors, which doesn’t seem likely any time soon.
I bet you the President wishes he would have not wasted so much time doing things like the Jay Leno and David Letterman shows. I bet you he wishes he would have started smaller, got something passed and moved onto more important agenda items, like jobs.
But he didn’t. Each week that passes by is a week closer to the mid-term elections. Each week that passes by is a week farther from his inauguration, where he is power was at its greatest.
I live my life in two-week increments. Each time I pick up a gallon of milk, I think to myself, what am I going to get done in these next two weeks.
I doubt the President will get health care done in the next weeks (or anything else for that matter).
